Dear Teacher,

Do you have an idea for a class recycling project? Do you want to teach your students how to compost? Could you save your school money with a plan to save energy? Or do you have a new idea about a way to help protect the environment?

You're invited to participate in the Synopsys Outreach Foundation Green + 1 Challenge!

Our non-profit foundation is awarding 10 grants to California K-8 teachers in the amount of $2,000 each to help them undertake class or school-wide projects intended to have a positive and measurable impact on the environment.

Applying is easy. Once you've developed your project idea, just fill out a short application and describe for us what you propose, your commitment to implementing it, and most importantly, the method of measuring its positive impact on the environment.

The projects will be implemented during the 2012-'13 school year, and all proposals are welcome-new and creative ones as well as traditional ones. To help you jump-start your ideas, we've included some sample projects with suggested goals, useful materials, timelines, and links to the CA State Science Standards.

Applications will be reviewed by a panel of distinguished representatives from the environmental community.

Here's how Green + 1 works:
 • In September 2012, the 10 schools awarded the grants will receive $1,000 to cover upfront project materials and expenses.
 • Schools will receive an additional $1,000 in May 2013 upon satisfactory completion of the project and the submission of a final report, including a short video presentation.
 • Any portion of the funds not required for the Synopsys Outreach Foundation Green + 1 Challenge may be applied to future classroom science activities.

Green + 1 Challenge FAQ's

Who is eligible to apply for the Green + 1 Challenge?

K-8 teachers at schools in California. The schools must be either public or private non-profit schools with 501 (c)( 3) status (determination letter must be provided).

What's the deadline to apply?

April 16, 2012 at 5 p.m.

When will I know if our school has been selected to receive a Green + 1 grant?

Judges will make a decision no later than May 15.

What is the Synopsys Outreach Foundation?

It's a non-profit organization that annually supports over 130,000 California students and teachers developing science projects. Founded in 1999, the Foundation donates science fair materials to schools, offers training to teachers, and supports numerous science fairs and competitions.

What are the criteria for selecting recipient schools?

Practicality and measurability of the project.

What final report is expected?

Teachers will submit a brief written report and a short video about the project. To avoid privacy concerns, only the teacher should appear in the video-no students. It doesn't need to be an elaborate production, e.g. just the teacher talking to a cell phone camera is fine. We're interested in your project, not your videography skills.

How long should my project last?

That's up to each teacher. It could last the entire school year, or just part.
