Santa Clara County Middle School Teachers
Purpose
The purpose of the Science Project Support Program is to encourage the development of science projects of depth and sophistication, and to assist teachers in supervising science projects to be entered in
The Synopsys Championship and/or
science-o-rama!.
Who Qualifies to Apply for Science Project Support?
Applications will be accepted for Science Project Support ONLY from teachers who (1) intend to have at least TWO projects PARTICIPATE in the 2011 Synopsys Championship, (2) per project, intend to devote a MINIMUM of 3 hours
outside normal classroom hours for projects entered in the 2011 Synopsys Championship (3) per project, intend to devote a MINIMUM of 2 hours
outside normal classroom hours for projects entered in
science-o-rama!
A Principal Verification Form, certifying hours spent outside normal classroom time must be submitted by a principal or administrator. A list of student projects must be submitted with the Principal Verification Form.
Teachers supervising student projects exclusively during normal classroom hours may
NOT apply for Science Project Support.
Nullification of Science Project Support
Failure to succeed in having at least TWO projects participate in the 2011 Synopsys Championship will result in nullification of the entire Science Project Support Application (including projects entered in science-o-rama!). Teachers who do not succeed in having at least TWO projects participate in The Synopsys Championship will not receive ANY Science Project Support from the Foundation.
"Participation in the 2011 Synopsys Championship" means that the project is accepted and that the student(s) are present for judging at the Championship.
The Synopsys Championship
The Synopsys Silicon Valley Science and Technology Championship is the annual science fair for students at schools in Santa Clara County and is open to students in grades 6-12. It is organized and administered by volunteers from the Santa Clara Valley Science and Engineering Fair Association (
SCVSEFA). A minimum of two Grand Prize winners advance to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).
science-o-rama!
science-o-rama! is a science fair or display, held by your school, that you organize at a location, date and time that you determine.
Expectations for Teachers
Succeed in having at least TWO projects participate in the 2011 Synopsys Championship.
Per Science Project Support Package awarded, provide a minimum of
2 hours,
outside normal classroom hours, of direction, guidance and assistance to students developing science projects to be entered in the your school's
science-o-rama!
Per Science Project Support Package awarded, provide a minimum of
3 hours,
outside normal classroom hours, of direction, guidance and assistance to students developing science projects to be entered in
The Synopsys Championship.
Example: A teacher applies for a total of 15 Science Project Support Packages: 3 Support Packages for projects to be entered in science-o-rama! and 12 Support Packages for projects to be entered in The Synopsys Championship.
The teacher must spend 6 hours (3 projects X 2 hours outside normal classroom hours), supervising the projects to be entered in science-o-rama!; and must spend an additional 36 hours (12 projects X 3 hours outside normal classroom hours), for projects to be entered in The Synopsys Championship.

Notify a principal or school administrator that a Principal Verification Form must be submitted to the Foundation to certify the hourly requirements (above).
Include a list of student names and their projects on the Principal Verification Form.
In advance, arrange an ongoing process of verification with a principal or administrator.
Encourage students to undertake projects of significant depth and term.
If entering projects in The Synopsys Championship, provide direction, guidance and assistance to ensure the proper and timely submission of applications.
Submit information in lieu of a W-9 tax form and a Form DE542 (Note: Science Project Support is taxable income. Science Project Support of $600 and more is reported to the IRS on a 1099 tax form. Science Project Support of any amount is reported to the California EDD on Form DE542.)
Confer with other teachers at your school participating in the Science Project Support Program to select a SCHOOL CAPTAIN who will be responsible for placing one order for materials for your school.

A $75
per project Science Project Support Package, payable directly to the teacher and based on the number of projects accepted, entered, and participating in
The Synopsys Championship;
A $10
per project cash donation, payable directly to the school, for project materials, equipment, application fees, etc.;
Science Project Poster Boards.

A $50
per project Science Project Support Package, payable directly to the teacher and based on the number of projects entered in
science-o-rama!;
A $10
per project cash donation, payable directly to the school, for project materials, equipment, application fees, etc.;
Materials DONATED to your school to help with your
science-o-rama!, including:

NOTE: To order these materials, each participating school will be contacted
in October and asked to identify a SCHOOL CAPTAIN to serve as a
point of contact.
The SCHOOL CAPTAIN will be asked to submit ONE request form for
materials on behalf of all the teachers participating in the Science Project
Support Program at your school.
Science Project Support Guidelines and Limitations

Principal Verification Forms for projects entered in The Synopsys Championship must be received by the Foundation no later than
April 1.

10 days following the event, whichever is first.
Science Project Support Packages are available only to teachers at public schools, or private schools with 501(c)(3) non-profit status. (check with school administrator if unclear)
Science Project Support Packages are available only to teachers at schools located in Santa Clara County, California.
Science Project Support Packages are awarded on a
per project basis.
A maximum of three students may work on one
project.
A teacher may apply for a
maximum of 15 Science Project Support Packages.
A teacher may apply for a
combination of 15 Science Project Support Packages (e.g., a teacher may receive Support Packages for 3 projects for The Synopsys Championship,
and 12 projects for
science-o-rama!, or any combination not to exceed a total of 15 projects).
A project may not be double counted (i.e. a teacher may not receive 2 Science Project Support Packages for the same project entered in
The Synopsys Championship and
science-o-rama!).
Science Project Support is
not awarded for Technical Papers.
The overall number of Science Project Support Packages available for distribution to teachers
is limited.
Currently, there is no limit on the number of teachers at each school that may participate in the Science Project Support Program. However, in order to ensure an equitable distribution of Science Project Support Packages, the Synopsys Outreach Foundation may choose to impose a limit if necessary.
Students may enter projects in
either or both The Synopsys Championship and
science-o-rama!. (Note: these two events have different application forms and review processes).
Project applications for
The Synopsys Championship must be submitted and approved by the Santa Clara County Science and Engineering Fair Association (SCVSEFA). For details, please consult the web site at

Projects entered in
science-o-rama! will be reviewed and approved by the teacher through a process of his/her own choosing.

Science Project Support Application
Applications may be submitted no later than 5:00 p.m. on
October 15, 2010.
Please apply as soon as possible. The number of Science Project Support Packages is limited, and the application process WILL BE CLOSED once the quota is reached, and may close well before the 5:00 p.m. October 15 deadline.
Science Project Support applications will be reviewed and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
Completing a Science Project Support application does not enter the project in the 2011 Synopsys Championship.
