Science Projects Grants
for
High School Teachers (not in the ESUHSD)
in Santa Clara County, CA

Purpose

The purpose of the Science Project Grant Program is to support teachers devoting significant time outside normal classroom hours in supervising student science projects to be entered in the Synopsys Championship.

Who Qualifies to Apply for a Science Project Grant?

Applications will be accepted ONLY from teachers who intend to devote a MINIMUM of 5 hours outside normal classroom hours, per project. This means that a teacher applying for the maximum 20 Science Project Grants must devote a MINIMUM of 100 hours of assistance outside normal classroom hours during the academic year.

Verification of hours spent outside normal classroom time must be submitted by a principal or administrator no later than April 1, 2009. Forms submitted after this date will not be accepted and will result in cancellation of the Grant.

Teachers supervising student projects exclusively during normal classroom hours may NOT apply for a Science Project Grant.

The Synopsys Championship

The Synopsys Silicon Valley Science and Technology Championship is the Regional Science Fair, open to students in grades 6-12. It is organized and administered by volunteers from the Santa Clara Valley Science and Engineering Fair Association (SCVSEFA). A minimum of two Grand Prize winners advance to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).

Expectations for Teachers

  • Per Project Grant awarded, provide a minimum of 5 hours, outside normal classroom hours, of direction, guidance and assistance to students developing science projects to be entered in the Synopsys Championship.
  • Example: a teacher who has been awarded 8 Grants for projects to be entered in the Synopsys Championship must spend at least 40 hours, outside normal classroom hours, supervising these projects.
  • Notify a principal or school administrator that a Principal Verification Form must be submitted to the Foundation to verify hourly requirements (above).
  • In advance, arrange an ongoing process of verification with a principal or administrator.
